Fast

My old computer took more than three hours to upload 150 photos.  I just uploaded over 3,000 in less than five minutes.  Oh my god.  This thing is fast.

Here's a sampling of some of my work from over the past many monthes.  I've been almost exclusively been posting phone shots since September, since getting pictures off of my digital camera has been excruciating.  Taking photographs with my digital camera hasn't been rewarding, since I know that they will sit on that memory stick, untouched, unshared, and unedited.  So, I haven't been doing it.

I also noticed, while I was going through these, that I'm starting to develop a style.  That's kind of neat.  Now I have to start to expand, break, tweak, and just generally make it better.

A world of possibility has just been opened.  I'm so happy.

Enjoy!

Coffee and Tea

If you've been reading this for any length of time, and have picked up anything about me as a person, chances are, the one fact that you might have picked up is... I love hot drinks.  I love them.  Just, love them, love them.  Coffee, tea, cider, hot ginger drinks, steaming eggnog... Hand me one, and I'm just the happiest lady ever.  Coffees make my heart sing, partially because of the warmth and comfort in every cup, and partially because I'm hopelessly addicted to caffeine.  Teas are so very different from one another. So many varieties!  That probably sounds ridiculous, but wow.

Tea is the bomb.

My love of hot drinks has also made me love hot drink paraphernalia like pretty boxes of tea, stylish mugs, and dainty saucers.  Hell, I even get excited about interesting take-out coffee cups.  Ones with particularly interesting lids never cease to make my day.  I kind of wish that I was kidding.  But, I'm easily amused.

I've amassed a stupid number of photographs of mugs, cups, etc over the past few months of non-blogging, because I take my phone everywhere.  I used to take my camera everywhere, but instead of carrying it with me at all times, I've taken to making specific excursions with it.

Since I started doing martial arts, my bag is constantly full of martial arts gear.  The problem here is that after class is done, my gear is sopping wet.  With sweat.  Gross, gross body juice.  The exact opposite of happy sunshine coffee goodness.  On the list of things I don't want my beautiful piece of digital equipment, my camera, around, clothing drenched in my own sweat is pretty close to the top.  So, I don't bring my camera most places.  Even though things are nasty, I still tend to need my phone, and that makes me use my phone camera.  My phone tends to pop out while I'm in cafes, and, bam!

 Coffee pictures.

I hope you enjoy.

Since this has to do with hot drinks, I know I'll enjoy it.

Bits and Pieces

A few weeks ago, I shared a post about how enamored I have become with Instagram, an iPhone app that puts film-like filters over phone photographs.  It's stupidly delightful, and I've been playing with it a lot.  On days when I know I might be able to get a few good shots in, but am not planning to go out for a long shoot, it's a nice way to carry around fewer expensive electronic items.  Plus, as someone who very much wants to begin experimenting more with film, it's an opportunity to see some of the styles of different vintage cameras and such.

So, here a few of my recent shots, complete with little stories .  I hope you enjoy them!

My favourite Teacup next to my windowsill.  I got this awesome thing at Urban Outfitters- it's a pretty, teacup style, but it's large like a mug.  And I like to drink lots of tea and coffee,  so the larger the cup, the happier my morning tends to be!  Now that I have a great new job and have to show up by 9AM after a forty-five minute train commute, a happy morning me is a far preferable option.  Not that it wasn't always, but it is even more so now.

This photo shows, if you hadn't guessed it, the Brooklyn Bridge!  It was taken during one of my many traipses over the structure.  I don't remember when.  If I went to my Facebook and checked the date and time, then I would know, but frankly, it's rather irrelevant.  My favourite thing about this photo is the awkward man's head that made its way into my frame at the very last minute.  Something about his excellent and spiky hairstyle just makes me grin like a little schoolgirl.  Here's this gorgeous, majestic bridge, and its classy cords and lamppost- and then this guy with goofy hair.  Frankly, I'm extremely glad that he stepped into my shot.

The most fun thing about taking photographs with my phone, however, is that people sometimes cannot tell that I am, indeed, photographing them.  I've always loved street candids and the like, but my ability to take photos discreetly is a bit dubious, to say the least.  (What I mean is that I totally suck at it.)  But now, I can take this kind of picture.  So, here is my Starbucks barista, in Tribeca, pumping some lovely, sugar-free flavor into my latte.  Or, it may have been equally lovely sugary flavor into someone else's coffee.  In any case, I sincerely enjoy this filter- it's called Poprocket, and the name makes me want to groove to the Spice Girls with my hands covered in Ring Pops.  I'm not quite sure why that is, but it sounds like fun, so I'm just going to go with it.

THE DOLLAR DUMPLINGS.
These are a New York institution.  At least, for me.  You can get five delicious dumplings for only one dollar.  The sign outside is mostly in Chinese, except for, very small, the words "Fried Dumpling" in all caps.  I believe there is a letter missing somewhere too.  This place is on what is basically an alleyway street right near Columbus park in Chinatown.  There is no real door- to get in, you walk through some of that hanging plastic strip, which does very little to keep the heat in or out.  There is always the same woman working behind the counter, who seems to be the owner.  Sometimes there is another person with her, making dumplings as she shells them out.  She barely speaks English, but asks you "how many?" and the proper response is to hold up the correct number of fingers.  You give her that number of dollars, and she hands you plates or take out containers full of that many multiples of five nummy dumplings.  There is a bar with hot sauce and vinegar sauce, and about seven stools.  The service is rude, the food comes instantly, and it is obscenely cheap.  Perfectly New York City in every way.  I love it.

Dainty Little Things

The original Anthropologie store in Philadelphia is absolutely worth a trip.  If you find yourself in or around the City of Brotherly Love in the near future... go.  Just, go.  It's beautiful!  All Anthropologie stores are very well designed.  They sell lovely products, and show them off on vintage and antique furniture, using cute little tags and signs to advertise the price and name.

The original store is particularly good though.  It's in a lovely old building just on the corner of Rittenhouse Square, near a bunch of little French Bistros and such.  There is a winding spiral staircase with what used to be a big grand fireplace on a landing from the stairs.  Gorgeous.

I'm basically obsessed with this company.  If I could fill my wardrobe and apartment with their goods, I would in a heartbeat.  In the meantime, I am content to enjoy their sale racks and photograph their home goods!

While at the store in Philly, I did pick up a stunning black floral apron from their sale rack... for only $20!  It was very exciting.  My sister bought the little bunny dish in this first photograph... I think it was about $10.  So, they do have cheap things.  You just have to dig a bit.  But, everything is fantastic.

Inspiration Fridays: Tea Time

Tea makes me so happy.

Honestly- I just like hot drinks in general.  Tea, coffee, cider, it's all great. A pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks always brightens up my day.

But, coffee doesn't have the same quality as tea.  Tea makes me feel classy, refined, girly.  I either feel desperately British or Asian, depending on whether I'm drinking black or green.  Green makes me feel rejeuvanated, black wakes me up.  As a matter of fact, I'm sitting here typing this with a nice mug full of ginger peach green tea.  Yummy.

Tea motifs feel so delicate, so feminine in style.  Tiny china cups with dainty flowers, toile prints, slices of lemon, and sugar cubes are all so delightful.

Inspiring, even.
