Inspiration Fridays: A Book, a Hot Drink, a Treat, and a Snuggle

As the weather gets colder, I like to wrap myself in warmth, eat delicious food, enjoy quality entertainment, and snuggle with my darling.  I feel as if this is fairly common practice.  During the winter, we enjoy hot beverages, the comfort of cozy scarves and sweaters, and the simple pleasure of long, dark nights with a lamp and a book or movie.  Though Thanksgiving hasn't yet arrived, I've already taken to burrowing into my couch with novels, wearing comfy knee socks and drinking hot chocolate whilst playing video games, and piling blankets on top of myself and Danny as we catch up on some of our favourite TV shows.  It's easier to wear dark or warm colors in the cold weather, to surround yourself with everything that makes you feel warm and safe, in contrast to the harsh winds and temperatures outdoors.

Today's post is devoted to the urges we get to hole up in a cocoon, eat breads and pastries, drink coffee, tea and cocoa, and grab a book and a snuggle buddy.  Because that is what inspires me today.  I'm doing my best to beat it by working out and attempting to dress well, but honestly, all I want is a pain au chocolat, my space heater, my boyfriend, a sweater, a latte, and a good 500 pages of fantasy to accompany my winter hibernation.

Let's Be Real... ists

I'm not an optimist, I'm a realist. I see opportunities where others see roadblocks because the roadblocks made me turn, and oh, hey!  Something new, interesting and different was around the bend. Others see change on the horizon and prepare for battle, I open my arms, because, well, change is the only constant in life that I'm aware of.

I really don't understand pessimism.  Pessimists- I'd like to ask you a few things, because, frankly, I just don't get it.  What are you making better about your life, or the lives of others, by being so negative?  I actually don't know the answer to that question, and I'd love some enlightenment.  Do you feel better about yourself because you sound smarter and more jaded than the average, possibly happy human being?  Is that it?  A kind of self-congratulatory moment of victory? I understand that premise.  Do you feel better about yourself because you've torn down someone who seemed to be actually happy about your situation?  If so, what have you really accomplished by this? Or, more insanely, do you not feel any better at all about anything, but simply accept that the world is awful, and there is nothing you can do?  If this is the case, dear god, why?  Seriously?  Do you not realize that you're the master of your own fate?  Is this a crazy concept?

Breakfast in these colors isn't a crazy concept (it's just delicious).  Which is nuts.  So...

Your choices and attitude affect your life.  I know I'm not the first person to ever say that.  If you decide to see the positive in situations, instead of the negative, you will feel better about situations.  This can become a practice.  Or, simply, see the real in situations instead of hyper-dramatizing them.  That helps too.  Also, change will happen whether you want it to or not.  So, you might as well figure out how to make the best of that change.

I'm ranting, I know.  Sorry.  But, I just don't get it.  Pessimism is the most toxic, nasty thing in the world.  It destroys wonderful people.  It takes beautiful, lovely, intelligent human beings and turns them into snarky, nasty, depressed zombies.  Pessimism is tragic.  It kills.  I'm baffled as to why people choose to engage in  it so often.

Especially when we could just laugh it off over some tea...

I don't even call myself an optimist.  Others do.  I call myself a realist, because this is the way I really see the world.  For example, I think that all people are inherently good, and generally have good motives, mostly because this has been proven through numerous studies.  It's science, kids.  We think people are out to get us, but most people aren't out to get us.  The majority of people don't really care what we do, and some actually want to, *gasp* help us.  Genuinely, help us.  People are jerks, yes, but, like you when you are an jerk, they often have good reasons.  Sometimes, they don't.  Sometimes you don't, and sometimes I don't. I guess we're both out to get them too? We all have good moments and bad moments.  This is true.  Some people have more bad moments than others, and some have more good moments than others.  The only thing this proves is that we're all human.

And humans built the Flatiron Building, which, look at it!  It's so pretty!

The world really is great, and humanity has done a lot of great things.  We can romanticize the past or the future, or fiction, or whatever we want, but in the end, we live in the now.  What's happening at this moment.  The strand of hair I'm pushing out of my face, the keys underneath my fingers.  The air currently in my lungs.  Now.  Humanity has done a lot of bad things too, and will continue to do so.  This is true.  But, the ones who do these good and bad things are me and you.  Us.  The humans.  The parts of humanity.  And if we look at the world and think that it's awful, we are less likely to care about where it's going, because, whatever, it's already in the crapper.  If we look at the world and see something wonderful, magical, and worth saving, we are probably going to care about it.  This applies for everything- other people, animals, plants, ideas, concepts... It's the reason everyone wants to save the baby seals and no one really cares about endangered insect species.  The seals are cute and obviously wonderful, so more of us care.  It's harder to care about the bug because seeing its endearing qualities is more difficult.

Unlike these endearing, pretty buildings.  Whee!

This world isn't a bug, though; it's already a seal (flowers, puppies... come on...) and most people are seals too.  People are beautiful, and worth it.

You're beautiful, and you are worth it.  Stop deciding that you aren't with that powerful pessimism force.  Stop it.  Stop it right now.  Let yourself be beautiful.  Let yourself win.  Let yourself acknowledge your own worth. Let yourself shine.  Stop being scared.  Stop letting the world tell you that it can't be done.

If we all do this, maybe the whole world will shine a little bit brighter.  You never know until you try.  What have you got to lose?

Literary Strips

Yesterday's post was a bit of me challenging, ranting, perhaps being a bit overbearing for a blog like this, maybe being a little heavy (or a little bit too light and happy depending on your taste) so I decided to counter it on this splendid Monday with a little bit of light fun and humor.

The world really is awesome, sponsored in part by comics, which are unquestionably awesome.  Everyone likes comics, even if they are too "cool" to admit it.  At least, that's my theory.  But these strips are just a bit of literary hilarity and entertainment.  I'm not sure who the author is, but whoever he or she is, they are pretty darned brilliant, and their comics were featured in a display set-up at Housingworks Bookstore and Cafe in Manhattan last week.  They may still be, but I went to Housingworks last week, and they were definitely there then.  I was hoping to share more of them with you, but my photos turned out to be tragically, unintelligibly blurry... thus a few comic photos and the other random stuff from Housingworks at the bottom.

Anyways, enjoy!
(Oh, and I still dare you to consider that the world might be beautiful.  For kicks and giggles if nothing else.)

Oh, and Happy Columbus Day!

Coffee and Tea

If you've been reading this for any length of time, and have picked up anything about me as a person, chances are, the one fact that you might have picked up is... I love hot drinks.  I love them.  Just, love them, love them.  Coffee, tea, cider, hot ginger drinks, steaming eggnog... Hand me one, and I'm just the happiest lady ever.  Coffees make my heart sing, partially because of the warmth and comfort in every cup, and partially because I'm hopelessly addicted to caffeine.  Teas are so very different from one another. So many varieties!  That probably sounds ridiculous, but wow.

Tea is the bomb.

My love of hot drinks has also made me love hot drink paraphernalia like pretty boxes of tea, stylish mugs, and dainty saucers.  Hell, I even get excited about interesting take-out coffee cups.  Ones with particularly interesting lids never cease to make my day.  I kind of wish that I was kidding.  But, I'm easily amused.

I've amassed a stupid number of photographs of mugs, cups, etc over the past few months of non-blogging, because I take my phone everywhere.  I used to take my camera everywhere, but instead of carrying it with me at all times, I've taken to making specific excursions with it.

Since I started doing martial arts, my bag is constantly full of martial arts gear.  The problem here is that after class is done, my gear is sopping wet.  With sweat.  Gross, gross body juice.  The exact opposite of happy sunshine coffee goodness.  On the list of things I don't want my beautiful piece of digital equipment, my camera, around, clothing drenched in my own sweat is pretty close to the top.  So, I don't bring my camera most places.  Even though things are nasty, I still tend to need my phone, and that makes me use my phone camera.  My phone tends to pop out while I'm in cafes, and, bam!

 Coffee pictures.

I hope you enjoy.

Since this has to do with hot drinks, I know I'll enjoy it.

The Night After...

After my post about stencils and Banksy yesterday, I decided to sit down, chill out, and re-watch "Exit Through the Gift Shop".  Why?  Because Netflix loves me and is streaming it, along with most everything else I could possibly want to watch.  The artsy fartsy, hipsterrific documentary was then followed by the first episode of Afro-Samurai, and the first half of "Mary, Queen of Scots" with Vanessa Redgrave.  I'm a cultural beast, my friends.

More importantly, were my snacks.  Snacks are imperative while watching films.  First, there were the Spiderman fruit snacks.  No, I can't really top them on this list.  But, let's just say that herbal tea and banana nut muffin flavoured oatmeal with milk came along later, and they were epic, relaxing, and the reason I had to go to bed halfway through "Mary".  I loved the play version a few years ago on Broadway, and the film was fantastic, but considering that the tea I was drinking is called "tension tamer," I was full of delicious carbs, and had barely worked out today... Yeah.  I was feeling fat and lazy and ready to crash.

I generally don't spend my evenings alone like this- as I work more and more often at my super amazing job, which I love, I have less and less time to myself.  I couldn't be happier about this.  Not that I don't enjoy a quiet, obligation-free day of reading, movies and video games.  I do.  I definitely do.  Just, when that becomes every day, as it basically was when I was unemployed during the cold winter monthes, it gets really old.

However, lately, my nights have been particularly quiet.  I live with my boyfriend, Danny, you know, that muscular bearded guy who pops up on here sometimes, and we generally hang out in the evenings.  We'll catch up on TV shows, go on walks, and sometimes, now that I've started martial arts, even spar.  He's currently going through a nocturnal period for his job, so he's not around very much at night.  Danny works in theatrical lighting, and is working the spotlight on a show that takes place outside in a park, here in the city.  For obvious reasons, it is pretty hard to do any adjustments on the lights during the daytime, so he works at night.  Often, he doesn't get home until 4 or 5am, and considering that I am always in bed by 1am, if not as early as 11pm, I get to spend the night in quiet.

So, last night, it was movies, corny self-promotional mugs, tea, Spiderman, Scots, afros, and street art for company.

Happy Tuesday everyone!

Thank you, as always, for reading Travel and Toile.  I can't tell you how much I appreciate you.  I can try though- I really, really, appreciate you.  From the bottom of my heart.  Thank you for all of the support of whatever this artistic stuff is that I do!

A Little Slice of China

Manhattan's Chinatown is one of my favourite places in New York City.  It has enough Chinatown in it, but a lot of people still speak English, so for those of us who know only what we learned from one fun episode of "Ni hao Kai Lan," it makes the culture fairly accessible.  And I really love what I know of Chinese culture!  I've said this before... but I'm craving the opportunity to learn more about it, by traveling there, or learning to speak the language or something.  This morning, as my boyfriend is off to take a belt test at his martial arts studio in Chinatown, it is really on my mind.  He's a little further along, since he is working on learning some martial arts from China, as well as from other countries, but I think I might be eventually able to catch up.
In the meantime, I will eat my dumplings, drink my tea, and dream.
