All the Boats in Boston

Almost every major city (that I have visited, anyways) seems to be based around a river or a lake.  This makes sense, of course, since waterways were once, and to a degree still are, a main form of travel and commerce, as well as a source of that all- important resource, you know, water.  Water is kind of necessary for human life.  Well, most animal life, actually.  Plant life too.  Life.

For some reason, however, I'm consistently surprised by the presence of these bodies-of-H2O. Every city has cool bridges, and neat scenes of bridges and boats.  And every time, I become excited.  I like waterfront scenes very much.  There's something wonderfully serene about rippling water, and the vessels floating upon it.  My shoulders immediately descend a few inches away from my ears, and my breath becomes deeper, slower.  Classical music starts swirling around my brain. I suppose this is why those relaxation tapes with sounds of waves are sold as often as they are.  We, us human peoples, tend togravitate towards the calming essence of water.  It makes cities a little bit more manageable and pleasant.  I know that a highlight of my day is always the bridge portion of my subway ride on the way to work.  The way home from work is in the summertime, but right now, it is very, very dark by the time I'm on my way back to our apartment.

I like water.  I like boats.  I took some photos of them.  I hope you like them too.

Inspiration Fridays: Aqua

I've been thinking a lot in colors recently.  Mostly I have been doing this to get my mind off of the grey and white snow that is surrounding me.  It's gloomy here.  The snow looks pretty, but I'm thinking about spring flowers already.  When it comes to happy colors, I think of aqua, the color that the ocean was in Miami.  The color of swimsuits and other summer clothing. All of these images have aqua, or some color close to it.  Because, I like to share what I'm thinking about.

Central Scenes

Central Park is a magical place.  Every time I go there, I get lost.  And every time I go there, when I get lost, I discover something new.  One time it was a castle.  Another time, it was a heron.  The benches are decorated with placques, and sometimes memorial bouquets like above.  The bridges reflect into the water.  The animals seem to dance.  As I said- magical.  Mystical.  Ethereal.  Especially in early morning, when all of these photographs were taken.  The sun was so low in the sky, and incredibly bright, causing refractions off of my lens (like the one above on the left).
Things like this are making me miss New York immensely.  I'll be back in late October .

The Birds Above

Just a fun shadow shot I took in Astoria a few weeks ago when it was a bit overcast.  Please, enjoy!

Morbid Perch

So, I was walking past Trinity Church in the Financial District, and I saw a pidgeon perched right on top of a gravestone.  My camera was out in a flash as I started to snap away at the bird.  Another pidgeon looked at the first, and stood on top of the adjacent double gravestone.  I was ecstatic!  What a neat happenstance.  Then, a third joined in.  The pidgeons were tilting their heads around as they noticed that some tourists had joined in the fun.  It's as if they were posing for us.

Watcher

This is an older photograph, taken in January at St. James Park.  This duck captured my intention immediately.  All of the other ducks were flapping around, quacking, swimming, fighting with one another... and this one just stood, watching.  It looked so pensieve, like it was analyzing the movements of the other ducks.  A commentator, a watcher, rather than a participator.
